Preparing Your Home for Fumigation

When you’ve chosen to have a fumigation treatment done at your home, you want to make sure to prepare it correctly. Having a comprehensive list that lays out all the steps you should take makes is so much less overwhelming. It also gives your fumigation company the perfect environment to ensure the success and the safety of your treatment. Western Fumigation is proud to provide you with steps you can take before your fumigation service as well as what to expect after.

Below are a few things you can do to ensure a successful fumigation service.

What to Do Before Fumigation to Prepare Your Home

√ Remove all items for human consumption such as foods, beverages (if not factory sealed), prescriptions, and over-the-counter medicines that are not in airtight containers or place them in NYLOFUME BAGS.

√ Remove all people, plants, and pets including fish.

√ Extinguish all pilot lights. Provide a list of all pilot lights and other open flames (such as furnace, water-heater, dryer, etc.) to our fumigation technician when he/she arrives.

√ Unplug all heating elements and turn off all air conditioning units.

√ Remove all mattresses and pillows with plastic coverings (or just remove the coverings) from the premises.

√ Provide access to all parts of your home including storerooms, closets, etc., which you may normally keep closed. Be sure all these doors are unlocked.

√ Remove any plant within 24 inches of the structure.

√ Remove all valuables such as jewelry and money.

√ Thoroughly soak all plants, shrubs, and soil within 12 inches of the structure that will be fumigated to a depth of 6 inches.

√ Heat your home so it is at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit when our fumigation technician and the crew arrive.

√ Notify all friends and relatives who may have occasion to show up at your home about the fumigation so that they will not try to enter the structure while under the care of Western Fumigation.

√ Remove or pull back any rocks or crushed stones along the foundation of your home so that the tarp will lie on a relatively smooth surface to properly seal in the gas.

What to Expect After Fumigation

Your fumigation company will aerate your home thoroughly and check it with gas-detection equipment until it is safe for re-entry. After it’s cleared, we will remove the “Danger” signs on the doors. Do not re-enter until these signs are removed. Under usual conditions, most fumigations are completed within a 24-hour period, and such “Danger” signs are normally removed in the afternoon or evening of the day following the start of the work.

Not following these steps can actually delay your fumigation (which will allow your infestation to get worse). Carefully following the above steps can help ensure a successful – and timely – fumigation process.

Be sure you have the direct number of a Service Supervisor or Service Manager if you have any questions during your preparation. Your fumigation company should be there for you at every step of the way.
